PRESERVATION / TRANSFORMATION SHOWCASES WORKS BY EMERGING LACQUER ARTISTS
SHANGHAI – (November 5, 2008) – Seventeen young, emerging artists working in lacquer will showcase their works at twocities gallery in an exhibit entitled, “Preservation/Transformation.” These artists uphold the tradition of lacquer painting while pushing the medium and the artform beyond conventional borders. Their works preserve the essence of Chinese heritage and express post-modern sensibilities with bold results. “Preservation / Transformation” opens on November 15 and runs until December 18.
Lacquer artists come from an esteemed tradition but are grappling with the contextualization and development of their artform in the modern art world. “There is a need to be transformed, reinvigorated to continue its legacy, and the requisite is stronger than ever for young artists to infuse this ancient art with new life,” says Cheng Xiangjun, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Artists Association Lacquer Art Committee and guest curator for this show.
“Preservation / Transformation” celebrates these artists’ achievements as well as their response to the awakening in the contemporary lacquer art movement. Opening reception is from 4 to 6 pm on Saturday, November 15.
